What does a VAT format check prove?
Different countries use different VAT identification structures. Some incorporate letters, control digits or different country prefixes. A structural check is useful for spotting obvious data-entry errors before an invoice is processed.
Worked example
A German VAT identifier typically has the DE prefix followed by nine digits; a Danish VAT identifier normally has DK plus eight digits. Matching those patterns says nothing about whether the company is registered.
Important assumptions and limitations
This tool does not perform check-digit validation or a live lookup. A structural match is not proof that a VAT number exists or is active. Use the European Commission’s VIES service where applicable.
