What are XIRR and XNPV?
XNPV discounts cash flows based on the exact number of days from the first cash flow using a 365-day year. XIRR is the rate at which XNPV is zero. Cash flows must have dates, and at least one positive and one negative amount is required for an IRR.
Worked example
For instance, -1000 on January 1 and +1100 one year later implies roughly a 10% annual return. With more cash flows the dated result can diverge materially from periodic IRR.
Important assumptions and limitations
Multiple sign changes can produce multiple IRR solutions, and numerical methods may miss roots. The tool scans a range and reports any separate roots found; it never guarantees uniqueness.
